Crossing the Continental Divide
I now live only a few minutes from the Continental Divide so I cross it every time I take a short drive to relax.
For those of you who do not know, the Continental Divide is the line where rain water is separated. On one side the rain ultimately flows to the ocean and on the other side it makes its way to the Gulf of Mexico.
There is also a Continental Divide in your path to success.
Think about every time you have ever succeeded in reaching a goal. At first you were excited about the opportunity and you jumped in with fervor. Then you caught a ride on the emotional roller coaster going up and down and around in circles wondering if you were going to quit or finish. Then one day you realized that you were going to make it. The things that once discouraged you no longer had any effect. They rolled away like water on a duck’s back. You knew that there was nothing that could stop you so nothing could discourage you from reaching your goal. You crossed your Continental Divide!
So, when does this happen? It happens at different times for different people. One lady I know spent two and a half years thinking she should quit or thinking she would not complete her three year Master’s Degree. But finally, in the beginning of her last semester she reached a point in which she knew nothing would stop her from reaching her goal. She crossed her Continental Divide. For others, it may come much sooner.
There is something you can do the help you cross that line sooner. Talk to yourself. Everytime you see yourself in the mirror, tell the face on the other side “You are doing something to reach your goal every day. You are going to succeed.” Be more specific about your goal and do this every day, every time you face a mirror and even when you are driving or think about what you want to succeed in. Do something every day towards your goal. Even if it is only a little, do something. Even if you miss a day, keep on chanting that mantra to the person in the mirror. One day that hard-headed person will believe you and soon after you will cross your Continental Divide.
Practice this every day. Practice this every day. Believe in that person in the mirror because that is who will take you across your Continental Divide and that is the person will take you on to victory.
Have you crossed your Continental Divide?
What is stopping you now?
