Exit Ads Followup
This is a follow up to the earlier article, Exit Popups Can Get Your Site Blacklisted or Banned.
In the above article, I talked about a couple of sites which accidentally linked to each other through Popup Ads. The end result was that visitors to either of the sites were trapped in an endless loop with no way to leave, unless, of course, they agreed to purchase a product. Additionally, due to the popularity of the technology, it was fast becoming commonplace to have to close out of six to ten sites before actually being able to close the browser.
I posted a the above article and a similar one on the Warrior Forum. It seems that since that time, I have not found a loop and I the number of sites to escape from is reduced to about three or four. It is still annoying, but much better than going through six or more exit popups. I have also noticed more sites using non-forced popups which can be dropped together with the site by closing the window/tab with that site.
While I realize I may have brought the problem to light for a few people, I think the real reason for the change is, not my announcement, but rather the end result on one’s bottom line.
It is widely known in the sales field that most first-time sales are made on or about the seventh contact. It only makes sense that if a visitor remembers a site as ‘escape-proof’ one can expect that those visitors will avoid the sites rather than return to buy the product.
So, what is your experience with unblockable exit popups?
